But is anyone else following Occupy Wall St and Occupy elsewhere?

What are you thinking and feeling about that?

A friend went to the Occupy the London Stock Exchange thing..they wouldn't let them in of course and everyone decamped to St Paul's Cathedral area for camping.

She didn't take her tent though..she's done enough of all that in the past..and wants to get much more into community stuff..she's best at that in any case...and I've encouraged that. I keep telling her she can't change the world in any case..so why not really enjoy in a pleasurable way, 'not being able to change the world' but trying anyway smiley - winkeye

But she'll never let up on BP..smiley - laugh

As in the giant BP spill in the Gulf?

Net neutrality is a serious topic, one that could potentially affect the h2g2 community and indeed h2g2's future.

What other BP is there? smiley - winkeye

Yes of course that BP..people going for occupations in all the worlds big capitalist cities' financial hearts generally dislike that BP I find smiley - biggrin

Our lot are now camped in the grounds of Westminster Cathedral..that's the Catholic one.not Westminster Abbey...the Catholic clergy are talking about shutting down the cathedral..and wanting them to move on though.

(And I assumed kea started this thread to discuss the occupations in the financial districts of big cities across the world).

I think it's great they are trying to do it.and highlighting so much obscenity of capitalism..Europe is in big big trouble..the UK is heading for a really bad depression. Unemployment is now at its highest for 20 years. Vast vast numbers of youngsters have no chance of work.and will be another lost generation like we had in Thatcher's time.

I keep hearing the US is in big trouble and now owes $trillions to the Chinese because of their loans.

Massive cuts are coming coming. But the bankers are back up to getting bonuses running into £billions over all..and yet we the people now own 90% of the giant multi national Royal Bank of Scotland.

There's a drip drip drip of information coming out. We had the riots last summer...for sure more unrest is on the way here..What good it will do I don't know though. But it'll make people feel better though maybe..rather than rotting at home getting depressed and suicidal.

(Er What's net neutrality? )

That's the last time I make an effort to show some respect for what an OP is asking when ignored by everyone else.

And then get ignored myself.

The personal is the political. How true that is.

>>> In what way HN?

Consider that Internet access via a mobile device (think Ford Prefect's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) is controlled by a very few telecom giants. Each of these mega-corporations has their own wholly or partly owned user generated content sites. They may not particularly want any competition to their own UGC site's popularity. And they control the speeds at which people can upload and download content. They can take steps to ensure connection speeds to their own UGC sites are zippy fast and any competitor UGC sites are glacier slow.

The only thing that stands between that scenario and h2g2 is a strong net neutrality regulation. Strong net neutrality regulations are basically what we don't have.

There may be only one relatively well-known BP, but the giant spill in the Gulf is not its only disaster. It isn't even British Petroleum's only disaster here in the US.

Occupy h2g2 would not be the only group of writers supporting Occupy Wall Street and Elsewhere.

Here is the first of 13 "Observations made by Lemony Snicket while watching Occupy Wall Street from a Discreet Distance":

"1. If you work hard, and become successful, it does not necessarily mean you are successful because you worked hard, just as if you are tall with long hair it doesn’t mean you would be a midget if you were bald."

> but the giant spill in the Gulf is not its only disaster. It isn't even British Petroleum's only disaster here in the US.<

So why do the US government continue to give Licences out and encourage deep water drilling?

Oh could it have something to do with not being so dependant on oil from middle eastern countries?

Presumably they have now banned BP from further drilling in the US then? Is that the case?

And what about all the stuff US oil companies do in places like Nigeria? Or do you not have docos about the incredible pollution and destruction of communities there?

Actually I don't have a damn clue what this thread is really about. I judged from what I read in the OP.

And I can't imagine any new person coming to h2g2 having the first clue either as nothing is properly explained...Everything is assumed.

Anyone clearly confused is basically ignored for a day or two.

If I start a thread, and someone is clearly confused..I'll make sure I explain clearly why I started the thread and make them feel at home..whether that be a long standing person or a newbie.

That hasn't happened here.

Effers, both Kea and Happy Nerd are extremely active behind the scenes at the moment. Really. You'll have to forgive them any brisk posting. Really. Full stretch here.

'Course, the reason why I didn't respond to your post was because I realised that I have become the person who gets all her news from Twitter and FB and the like. And interestingly, I am quite up to speed on #occupyUSA but not at all on #occupyUK. Yet I follow far more UKians than USians.
