Today's Google Doodle commemorates Joseph Plateau, one of the first people to demonstrate the illusion of a moving image.

He's also a dead ringer for David Battley, British character actor in a number of collections of apparently moving images, including but not limited to the movie "Krull".

Today Sir John Tenniel. Who? He's the guy who drew those iconic pictures in Alice in Wonderland.

I remember getting a copy of 'Alice' as a Christmas present as a kid. Those pictures creeped me out, big-time. smiley - laugh

I met an interesting young woman in college, first in a community college, then again a year after she left in a state university. In between, she had traveled to the London and spent a year around there and Berlin briefly. While she was in London she got an autographed copy of Alice in Wonderland illustrated by Ralph Steadman, Hunter S. Thompson's famed illustrator and Gonzo artist and partner in crime with Thompson. It was such a cool coffee table book.

While she was in London, she also met, and then moved in with Robert Smith of The Cure at the height of their fame. Everyone she met liked her and thought she was interesting.

Today is Ascension Day - a holiday here in Germany. Also known as Father's Day, as men traditionally would take a crate of beer

and go off in small groups of friends to the woods or somewhere to kick a smiley - football or whatever men do. I don't know anyone who actually does this, but no one will be this year anyway. The google doodle represents this.

BUT smiley - weird weird alert - I also spent a happy few moments going through the interactive google doodle about the mbira. Interactive, musical fun. No idea how I got both - according to Google, it's not showing in Germany (for obvious reasons)!! (I am not using a VPN)

That Mbira interactive was quite nice. My "performance", not so much. It was interesting watching my accuracy drop steadily over consecutive steps: 100%, 96%, 82%, to 75%. smiley - laugh

So it's Jesus Christ Airborne day? (That's what the German air force used to call it in English class. 'Mary Airborne' comes later in the summer.)

Not particularly noteworthy, compared to some doodles that have been on our screens since the last post here in June but I find it sad that this doodle is not visible in the UK.

Jacques Brel was a big name well known to me even back in my school days..
