OMG - have you seen the new Google Doodle?

There are two doodles today, depending on where you are. I'm in the UK, so I get an animated doodle celebrating the 105th anniversary of Amundsen reaching the South Pole. It's range is a bit odd - most of Europe, but not Italy or Poland; Canada but not USA; only parts of Central and South America; Australia and New Zealand (stopping off places for the British polar expedition); Japan, India, some central Asian countries and, for some reason, Jordan.

People living in the Maghreb (Muslim countries bordering on the Mediterranean) or Near/Middle Eastern countries get a doodle celebrating Doria Shafik's 108th birthday. She was a feminist activist who helped get Egyptian women the right to vote. Well worth celebrating, IMO.

There's an interesting juxtaposition between today's (US only) doodle and the headlines out of the Trump administration.
This weekend, Trump signed an executive order that put a halt to immigration and refugees entering the US from a handful of Muslim nations (while making an exception specifically for Christian refugees from Syria). Today's doodle commemorates a civil rights hero who fought against the illegal and heinous interment of Japanese American citizens during WWII.

Seven Earth-sized exoplanets discovered. (I capitalised the Earth, they didn't). Love the planet-selfie gif.

It is Weiberfasnacht today. The day when partying starts and women rule the roost and do silly things like cutting off men's ties.

The text is not quite right. The Town halls are stormed on 11 November which is the beginning of the carnival season. Weiberfasnacht, Schmutziger Donnerstag (dirty Thursday) is just the start of the partying.

I got the "light eater" question wrong. I knew they could eat a lot, that they could take down water buffalo or whatnot. But I didn't know how often they ate and assumed they'd go a while between big meals, like most big snakes.

I got them all right, too.
As for the light eater question, Komodo dragons probably do go a while between meals but they probably eat as much as they can for each meal. That makes them big eaters, IMO.
