"Among the sites to close include teen site Switch and community sites h2g2 and 606."

Makes all the complaints about the switch to barlesque seem a bit trivial now.

After the money spent making a new version. Sad but I am not too surprised.

Gnomon - time to move on

Let's wait for the Eds to confirm it before we believe it.

Although the actual wording is 'disposal of h2g2'. They will try to find an external home for it. That's how it was phrased at the meeting I was at.

Very sorry to hear this. It was a huge part of my online life for years.

Post 8

Gnomon - time to move on

I've e-mailed the Eds and asked them to confirm it here, but it appears from Jim's post that it is true.

Can't imagine they will find many buyers.

How much do they want for it? Can we buy it?

Actually my post was poorly phrased - it's almostly certainly free to the the right 'taker' - the costs involved would be running costs.

"H2G2 is a unique community but it does not sit comfortably alongside anything else we do. The site has been created, and is sustained by, its users and our hope is to find a new owner who will nurture it in the coming years."

I don't mind who takes the site over, just as long as they respect our 'heritage' and don't charge us for the privilege of posting. H2G2 has been free since it started. Imposing a charge is a sure-fire way to kill the site.

I'm going to wait and see what happens.

I cannot see why anyone would want to buy us or pay to sustain us - what is in it for them? As has been said before, Wikipedia does what we started out as better than we do.

Strip away the Guide and all you have left is the Community - priceless to us, but it has no value for an outsider.

Devastated would sum up my mood pretty well right now.

I use a couple of social network sites hosted by Ning. Anyone can set up a site, and the software actually works! See http://www.ning.com/

Yes, but without the Guide, we're just another messageboard...
