I just got a statement from a telecommunications company I haven't had an account with for 2 or 3 years. The statement shows a new 8c credit.
I'm wondering if I should write to them and ask for a refund given the account is closed.

Nah, no interest, no letter charge ... just demand you 8c - in cash.

My Grandpop used to enjoy the letters from his pension company asking him to confirm that he was still alive.

Go for it - they'd take you to court over it if you owed it to them!

Wouldn't bother. Once you factor in the letter, envelope, stamp, and your time to do all the above and post it, you'll be in negative equity territory!!
Nice dream while it lasted......

There was a bank here that used to charge an inactivity fee on dormant accounts. If there was no money in the account, they would still charge the fee, let the account go into overdraft, and then try to recover the amount 'owed'. Bankers

How many bills would you be able to pay with your satisfaction? Write to them and ask them to donate the money to charidee. That'll do wonders for your self-esteem!

You might have misunderstood. The satisfaction isn't in getting the 8c (I doubt they will really give me a refund). It's in pointing out to them the general futility of their existence.
Asking them to donate it to charity is good though

But nobody would be listening, of course. You'd be shouting into a deep, empty void...thus underlining the general futility of your own existence.
'Life. Don't talk to me about life!

It's ok, I already know the futility of my own existence
I think I'd be chuffed if they wrote back to me though. I'm intrigued to see what they would say.

I may well have misunderstood. As for pointing out their general futility of their existence, this could turn into a full time job!! Implicit or otherwise!!
I agree, it would be interesting to see if they could be bothered to reply to you. I'd tend to treat the whole thing as an experiment in "customer care", that way, when they inevitably don't respond you won't feel too disappointed.

Dear Kea,
Your existence, such as it is, is hereby officially justified. We have valued your life at 8c, which we enclose.
