h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Hey All!

I was just going to H2G2.com and i typed it into my browser. I forgot to put on the last 2 and i went to [Unsuitable link removed by Moderator]which was a sex shopping site or something. Now is that porn site trying to pull in people who mispelled H2G2? I heard that another shopping company bought loads of different spellings of amazon.com and when people typed in it wrong it came up with the other shopping site. So the people used that site adn Amazon lost bussiness.

I mean, H2G2 is hardly in competition with a porn site but do you think they bought that domain name ([Unsuitable link removed by Moderator]) to grab H2G2 users? The site was not called anything like [Unsuitable link removed by Moderator]. SO hmmmm. If they did chose that domain on purpose... that are ... skum and vermin.

I believe that it is fairly common practise for porn sites to grab all available names around popular websites, to attract *business* . And yes, we agree, we don't like it either... ;-(

So should we prepare for an influx of perverts who can'r spell H2G properly and accidentally put an extra 2 on the end?

Let's turn my post into a massive discussion about how porn sites appear on every search and have bought the most un-sex related domains. I believe animatedgifs.com is porn!

There is a URL spells itself "Altvaista". Something to do with town criers. I think. I clicked it away again. Of course, every time I type in "alt.." in the address bar now, I end up there. But it's not porn.

Oh what a wicked web that they do weave, when at first they web but to decieve!

Well that's a nice story, but h2g.com registered their domain name a year and a half BEFORE h2g2.com ...

That may be in this case, and that site may have some other weird reason for choosing h2g (or maybe that has to do with why this site is h2g2...) but you can't deny that it is a mark of some porn sites to take popular websites and claim a similar domain name.

Try www.123greeting.com vs www.123greetings.com
Or www.hotmale.com vs. www.hotmail.com

Those are the two that I know of personally, having been a techie in an elementary school, where kids misspell things, and end up going back...again, and again, and again

On the other hand, I'm reliable informed 'www.vibrators.com' is about plate vibrators (which aren't for vibrating plates, by the way! )and nothing porn related at all. You half expect to end up at porn sites by mistake occasionally, but it must be terribly disappointing to end up at a site for building equipment when you're looking for naked women!!!
