What are the most famous photos?
The Groob Posted May 24, 2009
I read on a website about photoshopped photos that the "Soldiers Raising Flag At Reichstag" photo could be included in the "photoshopped" list, as the photographer artificially darkened the smoke in the photo and also removed the watches of the soldiers because the Russians wanted to emphasize that Russian soldiers don't loot!

That big gap was for the version without watches that I couldn't find!
Not world famous perhaps, but everyone in the UK must know this one:

Pinniped, that Bhopal picture is very harrowing. That and the Sudanese child certainly cut you to the quick. There's another picture I've seen of an African child - I can't link to it, it's that tragic. I encountered it when some genius posted it on b3ta for larks. I can't even describe it, except to say it's the singular embodiment of starvation at its saddest.

Muybridge = from Wikipedia:
"In 1874, still living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muybridge discovered that his wife had a lover, a Major Harry Larkyns. On October 17, 1874, he sought out Larkyns; said, "Good evening, Major, my name is Muybridge and here is the answer to the letter you sent my wife"; he then killed the Major with a gunshot.
Muybridge believed Larkyns to be his son's true father, although as an adult, the son bore a remarkable resemblance to Muybridge.
Muybridge was put on trial for murder, but was acquitted as a "justifiable homicide."

Someone mentioned Mona Lisa?

This is remarkably unknown for the 'first photography ever':

'Famous photo' always conjures up this one to me:

You can see it in the lower part of your browser if you hover the mouse on top. I don't like post long links anymore (and I don't check whether the links are actually 'long' before shortening them )

Mol - on the new tablet Posted May 24, 2009
There *used* to be (in the days before 24 hour news channels, when thoughtful news was presented at decent intervals instead of being served up in the form of constant speculation) ... sorry where was I? Ah yes, there *used* to be an annual end-of-year review type-programme of the images of the year. Can't for the life of me remember its name but it was fascinating, not just the photos but also interviews with some of the photographers, and sometimes you also saw the contemporaneous shots that *didn't* become the iconic one.
No actual pictures to contribute - sorry - but enjoying the thread.

That's a lovely one Ellen.
I'm shying away from including the sports stuff as it seems a bit "local" as with Christine Keeler.
