Social Networks for writers

I'm writing an article on social networking for writers, to be published in a writing mag. Has anyone by any chance used social network sites to further their writing - either get them writing, publicise their stuff or build up a name for themselves?

The premise of my article was based on the fact that aspiring musicians now use MySpace as a matter of course to set out their wares... is there a similar site or process for aspiring writers on the web?

Any help, pointers or personal expriences greatly appreciated. I fear I may have chosen too broad a topic! smiley - erm

Secretly Not Here Any More

Well, if h2g2 counts, I cut my teeth here. Most of the skills I use in my job were built up by writing for the edited guide and The Post.

Thanks - as I was typing my post I thought, duh, h2g2. I'll obviously include it, but was wondering whether any of the better known social networks - MySpace, Facebook - are helpful to writers in any way?

I suppose it may be that I'm asking two questions - one about 'niche' websites that writers may use to further their craft/raise their profile. The second is whether mainstream social networking (MySpace, Facebook, Bebo, etc) can be of any use to writers.

Perhaps that second line of inquiry is going nowhere? Advice greatly appreciated.

I didnt accept it, but people are certainly trying... I'd have a look around and put out some feelers on-site smiley - smiley

Have you seen Get Writing? it was a hootoo sister site, very popular with aspiring writers and then killed by the BBC in unclear circumstances.

Has anyone ever used Writers' Cafe, which is a social network for writers? I signed up yesterday for the purposes of my article, and I've now got two friend requests!

It's an American site though, so wondered whether any Brits from h2g2 have used it, and if so what they thought of it?

I've also discovered these sites - has anyone got any experience of any of them? I think it will kill me to sign up to all of them to try them out:

Any feedback GREATLY appreciated.
