I think the Brish have been "snoozing" and "dozing" long before the War of Independance. Don't know if that's what we called it.

Why are there "forty winks" ?

How long is 1 wink, for that matter?

Snoozing is of unknown origin (according to my sources) and dozing has Scandanavian roots. It seems likely that before the war of independence the British were all napping - as it is only reasonably recently that this has changed from meaning a full sleep to meaning a short sleep.
