A Conversation for Ask h2g2
Can anyone think of a way to reclaim ask?

Its just when I started (all of half a year ago) if I wanted to have a nice informed debate all I needed to do was bring up ask and click on a random link. Now it seems I have a choice of word games, what is wrong with [insert name of subculture to be caloussly deconstructed here] what time/weather is it where you are and so on and so forth. I've spoken to a few peeps who have been around longer than I have and most say its been going downhill for years. Have the interesting threads that used to appear on ask migrated somewhere? Can I follow them? If not is there a way to reclaim it from a tide of monotonous chatter and endless wordgames?
Ahh, that feels better. I'll go back to regular life now.

It's been said before, but ASK really needs a list of subsections, for word games, serious topics, silly topics etc - all available from one page. This seems like common sense.

Sprinks: A suprisingly practical solution. Who do you harass to try and implement that sort of thing?
pedboy: Evolve into what though, I don't like the way that this worlds going - look at people of my age and gender *shudder* - I don't want to stagnate, but I would hope we could evolve in some other direction. Good to post that link though, it never hurts to read it every now and again.

Feedback I guess. I never bother myself. I expect anything suggested to disappear under an avalanche of feedback.

You could always create an entry for serious discussion, then post the A number here.
That way you could exercise some control, stating the sort of netiquette you expect.

I considered doing that, but I figure I'd never get enough people to visit to get any discussions going. Part of what I like about h2g2 is that there are so many people with so many different cultures and experiences it makes a lot of conversations really interesting, if you go into any of the smaller forums you tend to find there are five or six people making up its core and you never really get the depth of experience you used to on ask. Also I'm not sure serious discussion is exactly what I want, you need to be talking about serious things, or at least things that are not completely arbitary to keep it interesting, but if a thread goes off on a tangent for a couple of pages then thats rarely a bad thing.

I really don't know what else I can add to what I've already said on the matter, but you might want to to check this link Acid:

Well, I did it, I went and made an entry for seriousish discussion. A1146917. I urge people to go over and take a look if they would be so kind. I doubt this'll work, but figure its worth a go and certainly worth more than doing nothing.

Heheh. Not to put too fine a point on it but I did ask a load of people if something like this already existed. Well if nothing else the excerise helped me find it. Thanx flake
