My sister has a similar problem. Her weaknesses are Cardcaptors, Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing and Tenchi. She is fortunate enough to have friends similarly afflicted. They are even talking about making their own Manga, with themselves as main characters. I partake occasionally, but I try not to take enough to spoil my dinner.

I'm subscribed to ask H2G2. As the man who put the Anime and Manga Shack together, I tend to keep an eye out for people asking questions like this particularly;
or, alternatively;
Yeah, I like to display my ignorance on a wide range of topics to the maximum number of people...

I was an active watcher of Anime and reader of manga long before Pokemon hit our shores-I was at one of the first showings of Akira at the ICA in London, which was about 8-10 months before it was released on video. I had been reading manga for about a year before that.
But we wre a small group, and hard core anime fans remain very rare-when asked 2 years ago, Manga reckoned that a succesful video release was one that sold 2,000 copies over two years.
Pokemon has been very succesful because of the merchandising angle-it's a goldmine for comic shop owners and tv schedulers alike. It has certainly helped to popularise anime in the west in a way that straight to video releases have not.
Because Pokemon was popular, we now get Sailor Moon, Tenchi, Gundam, Dragonball, Evangelion, Blue whatever its called and Nadesico on satellite tv.

I think Battle of the Planets came over here before pokémon as well
(about 30 years before)

Indeed, Super Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (to give it the full Japanese title) was an early import, as were Blue Water and Aztec Cities of Gold.
Of course, back then, no one knew what they were.
Battle of the Planets is pretty buttchered as well...

Pointedly doesn't mention Project X, which I assure you has absolutely nothing to do with anime, no, nothing whatsoever....*
*this is a complete lie, but please do not tell anyone. Watch out for more details soon.

Was Cities of Gold an Anime? We checked the credits at the end of our videos and they were all French. Maybe I'm thinking of a different Cities of Gold to you.
Wasn't Transformers an anime? I'm told that was the one that got them noticed outside Japan. Of course, they were still minority viewing and typecast as children's TV.

I think the term is international co-production .
I'd guess the bits you think were Chinese were probably Korean, who were (and are) the masters of the cheap animation.

Isn't anime and manga basically animated child porn?? Admittedly I've seen manga once or twice, but it was full of sex and the girls all looked about 12. Can't remember which movies they were.......

Had this argument in another thread so you'll forgive me if I just say;
NO.
If I watched 3 hours of British Tv I could easily come to the conclusion it was all cr*ppy quiz shows or about domestic violence.
I could watch two US movies and think they all had Ahnolhd in.
Get a grip, please.
