I'm reading an autographed copy of "Scooters in the Sahara", the real life account of 10 rufty tufty bikers who rode Honda C90s across the desert to a hospital in the Gambia, where they donated the bikes and a load of medical supplies.

Was privileged to share a few pints with some of them this weekend.

Read two Rebus books since Thursday (quiet weekendsmiley - erm). I like crime novels, the plot demands attention but they just kinda sweep you along with being too demanding.

Now I've just started Casino Royale, by Ian Fleming. It's ok after 15 pages or so.

The Folding Star by Alan Hollinghurst.

I know everyone's reading The Line Of Beauty after the tellything...only I've had The Folding Star on my shelf for about 10 years after a friend raved about it.

It's rather good. Plenty of steamy man-on-man action.

I am reading 'Big Money' by PG Wodehouse, 'David Copperfield' (though I haven't been reading it much lately, but I will start again soon) and I am going to start 'Freddy and Fredericka' by Mark Helprin. (We met him at a book signing last night.

I'm reading a collection of HP Lovecraft's short stories, because I keep hearing references to the Cthulhu mythos and have no idea what the fuss is all about. I'm sure these stories seemed far scarier at the time when they were written. smiley - erm

"Catcher in the Rye" by J. D. Salinger, 1951. Despite being considered a "classic" and on required reading lists for schools, its pretty good. From Wikipedia:

"Its protagonist, Holden Caulfield, has become an icon for teenage angst. The book, written in the first person, relates Holden's experiences in New York City in the days after he runs away from his University-preparatory school Pencey Prep."

The movie "Igby Goes Down" reminds some of this book.

Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

At the risk of repeating myself (I'm sure I've mentioned this before on this thread)...

An important thing to realise when reading Catcher is that there's just been a big war. Lots of young men went away and never came back. Many of those who did were physically and/or mentally scarred. Only...none of the 'phonies' are talking about it.

Where do the ducks go in winter?

A brilliant book! Definitely in my all-time top ten.

That's his only book I haven't read. Or wait... Does he have another that is like a collection of his columns or something? But I have read all his novels.

I read Lonely on the Mountain (a Louis L'Amour Sackett book) on my short jolly, and finished Watching the English (didn't actually tell me anything I didn't know, but a cracking read nevertheless)

Now I'm reading Captain Hornblower. Fantastic, so far

Stephen Fry...

Coincidentally, I was listening to him (and Christopher Hitchens) on the way to work today:

WB - You mentioned Mark Helprin back there somewhere. I was lent a copy of one of his books called the Winters Tale I think. A great sweeping mythic story of a thing full of atmosphere. Unsatisfactory ending but left a strong impression. Are his other books worth seeking out?

Nearly finished Ian MacLeod's House of Storms, enjoying it a lot in spite of most of the main characters not being very likeable.

Sho, I am in the middle of Watching The English. As you say, nothing I didn't know (if I sat and thought about it), but fascinating anyway. I do find that she quotes Bill Bryson and Jeremy Paxman too often.
