A Conversation for The Catcher in the Rye - J. D. Salinger

I think this has to be one of the most consistently over rated pieces of indulgent self involved tripe ever written. It's made worse by the many youths who misread Caulfied as a misfit anti-hero and who then ape his disaffected cool. Catcher in the Rye has to be the most painful book I have ever read.

I agree it's over-rated and I wasn't keen on the sytle of writing - but I did enjoy it for what it was - and it did make me think about society's attitude to the kind of thing Holden was experiencing - not anything new nowadays mind you.
