In England it is called Marmite and is great! I ate this stuff in sandwiches for 15 years and by then I was addicted. Have discovered to my cost though that it can be a big trigger for IBS. Must check whether Marmite is made by Kraft Jacob Suchard because if they are owned by a tobacco co I want nothing to do with it. I have recently given up smoking (7 weeks ago) and pretty much object to putting money in tobacco companies pockets now!

I guess the reason Marmite affects your IBS is that it is a yeast extract? If so I think I will keep clear of eating Vegemite all the time. Not that I have had it for ages, just that sometimes I just get a craving for it.

I've found it is fine to eat now and then but if I have it every day then all the nasty little bugs start feeding off it and my IBS strikes!

I've written about this in the original Vegemite page, but I'll say it again here.
As a one-time microbiologist, one of the most common media for growing bacteria was one containing yeast extract - the powdered (pre-gunked) version of Marmite.
Knowing how well bacteria grow on this stuff, it's no wonder that eating it triggers IBS - the bacteria in your gut obviously love it as well!!

Makes you wonder if my IBS started long ago when I was a child - I knew it was all my mothers fault! You wait until I tell her!

Maybe it's a combination of food and the modern lifestyle.
For example, I can never remember _anybody_ having a nut allergy until a couple of years ago, and now there are warnings over every food item about "may contain nuts" (strangely, I've even seen this warning on packets of peanuts... 
)
So what's changed - our lifestyle/environment that is triggering an increase in allergies, or our awareness that we're not quite so cavalier about our health?
