I'm really starting to think about using a different search engine other than allways going for the Google> Has anyone got any ideas on which one to use?

I don't really know anymore. I pretty much just use google now. I do occasionally go to http://au.altavista.com/ when I can't find a good image in google images. Haven't used it for general web browsing in a long time though.
When I first started using the internet I used to use http://www.dogpile.com which gathered searches from a range of different search engines into one place. Back in those days, different engines came up with wildly different results, so it was good having them all grouped together.
If you find out about something else that turns out to be really good, let us know.

Some of the advanced google search pages allow you to narrow down the number of responses significantly,

you might also see the Google Search page for "google search categories"
& Wikipedia for "Search Engines"
My own number one complaint on Google, very poorly indexed and categorized and no filter blocking keyword stacking on the part of people posting to it.

Well there's still Yahoo in whatever country you choose and a search of search engines gives you dogpile on top, but that doesn't mean anything (we could Googlebomb h2g2 to be number 1 on a search engine search). Altavista is still there, but Bing (bing.com) is making a strong showing. I normally only use it for images but that could be worth a look.
