Got them all but Roosevelt. Thought of him in the car on the way home, but too late...

Oh, that was me scrambling the subject line. As I said, I was in a hurry

Overshadowed and Governorship and the second and third words of a series. It's the first word that lacks an "s". All three words would need the "s". But, of course, I could be wrong about "s" being a crucial letter.

I did not realize we had to take at least one letter from each of the words in the list.

I think that each of the three words has all the letters for the president involved. I guess if you eliminated all the letters that aren't in all three words, you'd have the letters that spelled the president's name.

In practice, you could think of a particular president such as Nixon, and see whether any of the clues have an "x" in all three words. As it happened, none of them did, so I ruled Nixon out as a possibility.
