OK, well I've only been here 14 years, so somebody will probably tell me that I'm using incomers pronunciations, but...

Penistone: penis rhymes with Dennis; tone is like ton in a normal place name.

Owlerton: Owler rhymes with bowler

Beaucheif: beech - if

Beasher, Oalton, Penston??

To correct the transatlantic balance a bit, how about Cincinatti, Seattle, Yosemite, Houston (pronounced "Ewston") and the two states, that sound like neighbours, but aren't quite, Kansas and Arkansas!

I KNOW this is an old thread - but never mind.

I live in Hampshire and not far from me is a village called Awbridge - locally pronounced Aybridge. We also have Owslebury - which is pronounced Ozzleburry, Alresford - Awlsford and Houghton - a village which even the locals pronounce in two different ways (Hoetun or Howton)!
