Can not even count . . .

a--10
b--11
c--12
d--13 <---- should be D
...
...
...
z--35
alpha--36
beta--37

Must have been around the time I learned counting learned to code a==1 b==2 for cryptography. Only later started using 0 as start of counting.

There's some doubt as to how that got started, one theory being that the Szechuan Chinese voyageurs trading with the Maya during the period from the 7th to the 9th centuries c.e. picked it up from the Maya and passed it on to their trading partners in Kampuchea and India.

Curiously, the original Hindu form for the zero, a horizontal lozenge, or diamond shape, is identically the same character employed by the Maya.

Of course, with the current dating system, b.c.e./c.e., one still lacks a zero.
