Is humanity flawed?
Hari Seldon Started conversation Dec 5, 2003
Is humanity basicly flawed? Is there something wrong with the way that the human mind works that prevents us from ever all being happy or having a stable, good society? Or is there some way that we can fix whatever is wrong with us?

Yes, we're basically animals and despite being given the gift of reason and freewill find it hard to resist our reptilian instincts.
There.

I think people tend to be too negative about humans and human nature. Look how much cooperation and harmony there is in an average society - things aren't ideal, but crime and violence are relatively rare...

I agree Otto. I have faith in God and humanity.
Many think this is a contradiction. On the conrary
it is the essence of the frailty that is humanity.

Humanity is flawed in that there is a belief in perfection. If you assume perfection doesn't exist then flaws in humanity are really just differences in individuals caused through nature and nurture, some of these differences are more favourable to some than others. Yes, humanity if flawed, but are flaws 'bad'? Surely the idea of perfection is a flaw. What Quality is humanity?

Are we perfect? No. Therefore, I suppose, we are flawed.
Does our not being perfect explain "bad things"? No. The reason for any specific bad thing must be more specific.
What is the difference between being flawed and being "basically flawed"? For that matter what is the difference between being happy and being "truly happy"?
There is no difference in either case, but one wording seems to be seeking a more universal or absolute answer. But the straightforward answer is correct.

I believe humanity to be flawed, but this is the basis of all religions really, that we should strive to a higher, better state.
We have developed a means of living as individuals, yet combining when threatened to overcome external threats. This crams us into a society that demands artificial constraints to allow co-existence and sharing of skills.
Flawed ? We're practically cracked beyond use, yet remain as something beautiful and growing.
