...or not.
In any case, although I am seldom on line lately, sign me up as the idiot savant with flashes of pure stupidity.

Oh, and I am a firm believer in the idiocy of the lineal *left/right* description of politics and an agnostic since the only form of beliefs I have ever been attracted to are some of the Gnostic scripts uncovered in past centuries and my father's firm belief that we only live on in the good and bad we do to people and how that affects them and they affect the next generation.

Well then, since we're being pedantic... you're in the wrong forum!! And where are your political/religious/philosphical labels?

Depends on how you do it. This forum is not for garnering votes, so perhaps people will refrain from petty point scoring a little more than usual.
Rational discussion brings benefits to understanding, and debating can be rational, particularly when there is little personally at stake.

Debate is to mental masturbation what lifting weights is to bicep masturbation.
By walking down the street am I performing some kind of feet masturbation?

Well, I know this is the wrong forum, but since someone took the bait as it were, I have to respond.
The interplay of minds represented by two opposing points of view is indeed more of exercise than purely for pleasure, but the addition of *pedantic* was the key to the question. For a pedant, the exercise itself is a form of pleasure, mental masturbation indeed. At the same time there are people who exercise for the pleasure/pain of it if not for the pleasure the results bring, so it again is a form of *self abuse* (as the phrase goes). Walking to get from one place to another is practical locomotion, but power walking for instance or walking for exercise is to increase health and thereby pleasure.

Right, so pedantic debating is mental masturbation.
OK, you can have that.

Yes, and so the next question raised is that is that kind of way of deriving enjoyment actually a Bad Thing? I mean, your choice of words is obviously intended for us to read it as a bad thing, but could we not have said 'given that debating is a pleasant way to pass a few hours by yourself without even needing the assistance of tissues to clean the mess up'? Although I'm not sure you can debate by yourself, can you?
