"Good on him for building what is probably the comprehensive guide to all things Hitchhiker, but does he have to be so bloody anal?"

I suspect the answer is yes. If you're the sort of person who's going to write a comprehensive guide to all things Hitchhiker (or any other thing), it probably helps to be fairly anal retentive.

Thanks, Jim. I feel a lot better about the movie. MJ's review, however, as disheartening as it may have been, should not be considered the be-all/end-all for the film. MJ may be the foremost expert on HHGG and Douglas Adams, but he is not the world's foremost movie critic, if indeed such a thing exists. There are going to be some bad reviews of this movie indeed, because all films such as this get bad reviews from critics no matter how well liked they are by the general public (too commercial for most critics' tastes). Just because MJ didn't like the movie, it doesn't mean a lot of us won't.

However, I think it's wrong of you all to say MJ is dumb. I admit that some parts of his review didn't seem like him talking, but they were. He really cares about this material (he must considering he wrote a 10,000 word review of this picture), and he clearly bends over backwards for it. I respect his opinion but I'm going to reserve judgement until I see the movie. And if I don't agree with MJ, so what? Much as I respect his opinions, I don't always agree with them, and I'm sure he won't hold it against me, as people have disagreements, and this movie has/will lead to them. Something we're all going to have to deal with.

I don't think anyone said he's dumb because he's far from that. Because of his obsessiveness with all things Hitchhiker, it's a shame he feels this way about the film and I do admit I was surprised when I read his review, but I get the impression he can't see the bigger picture.

Of course the film is going to be different from the other (all different from each other) incarnations and if they've dropped a few of the better jokes that's a real shame, but from other reviews there's a stuff in the film that more than makes up for that.

And he's probably sore that he didn't get a chance to be an extra in it or something smiley - winkeye

given that in the varous incarnations, different jokes and themes appear in different places, so how does he know these jokes were'nt excluded to be put in a sequal ?

Also, the TV seris & radio seris had much more room for contnt due to them not beign limited to a feature film lengh. You can't put all the script fo a 4/6 part radio seris into a 100 min long film and and have visuals to make it make sence, it is just not fesible

Well, I dunno about the former two (towel, bathrobe) but I have two weeks of vacation time from work which I had to take before May 1'st and I always said I would have taken off from work to see the flick, so this way I got it covered.

I must admit I'm surprised at the tone of MJ's review... Ok, he might not have liked the film and has every right to say so...
But as someone who professes to be such an authority on DNA/the books/the Towel/the radio series/etc... any respect he has from a DNA fanbase has got to be based on what he knows and writes...
If he's got it right, and everyone hates the movie, all well and good for him... but if he's got it wrong and everyone else loves the film then he's going to look a wee bit silly (the understatement of the year!) - any respect he might have had amongst the fanbase is likely to evaporate instantly...

So, was the review a courageous call or just a complete faux pas?

I think that question's been answered now at least...

Anyone know when he closed his site down? (Looks like it wasn't the brightest move for someone who makes money from the fans then)
