There are all sorts of reasons why a film might legitimately fail the Bechdel test (war films set in the non-recent past; films with very few main characters, all of whom are male; films which are basically monologues by a single (male) character; etc.), and many of these films may be excellent.
The number of individual failures, however, is indicative of an overall failure.

Actually, on reflection, "war films set in the non-recent past" probably *should* have female characters. There were a lot more women on and near battlegrounds than we used to think. (And most war films aren't exclusively set on battlefields anyway.)
