After eighteen years (and with the aid of a Google reminder) I finally remembered the anniversary of the day I was lead here by a cryptic email from TDV. I'd signed up for info regarding the terminally delayed Starship Titanic.
I'm getting kicked out of the bar so I'll continue reminiscing later.

Yeah, 9 September, 1999 was the busiest day for new logins in the history of h2g2. I got here via an email, but many were introduced to h2g2 by an episode of Tomorrow's World that evening.
I really wish I still had a copy of that email. It was and cryptic and thoroughly Douglas.
