Contrary to popular belief, Kansas City, Missouri is located where the Kansas River and the Missouri River meet. I believe the writer may have had the Mississippi river in mind, which is on the other side of Missouri (which is pronouced Miz-UR-ah if you are from Kansas).

If you are from one of the many fine schools from Missouri, you would know that there is no "a" or "z" in the name. Kansas City is not the only city to be named after a state/city next to it. East St. Louis is in Illinois, not that any sane person would want to go there, but there you have it.
