Thank you for sharing Ben, I marched in Sydney with my children. The atmosphere on the train going in was communal not isolationist. The people on the side of the street watching were supportive. Like the london march, the banners were simple, Make Tea not War, and Not in my Name were popular.
And this morning our prime minister was on the radio accusing all of us who marched; and there were many (between 200,000 and 300,000 depending on whose talking), for many reasons; of approving of Saddam Hussein and authenticating his regime. The actual news reports are:
"Mr Howard claims the demonstrators have given comfort to Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, and have made it more difficult to find a peaceful way of disarming Iraq.
Mr Howard says he respects the right of people to demonstrate against any military attack on Iraq but says their efforts could be making it harder to find a peaceful solution to the crisis over Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
"We are all accountable for the actions we take," Mr Howard said
And people who demonstrate and give comfort to Saddam Hussein must understand that, and must realise, that it's a factor in making it that much more difficult to get united world opinion on this issue, which in the end is the best guarantee there is of finding a peaceful solution, if there is a peaceful solution to be found," Mr Howard said."
And I am so angry, I could cry!

Perhaps someone should point out to mr Howard (as he's probably more likely to listen than Dumb and Dumber) that peaceful and war don't really compliment each other very well.

for Platypus.
If only it was easy. I marched despite sharing a lot of Pinniped's reservations. My main concern is that if there is a war, it should be a *legal* war. I do not want to belong to a nation which indulges in illegal agression.
But...
But... ...

Once, long ago, I believed that I lived in a country that was fair and just and believed in the rule of law. Then I learned to read. The more I read the more I realize that America is responsible for so much pain and suffering in the world. I think the intent has often been a misguided attempt to make things better, but the means have often been brutal and illegal. The sad part is that the majority of the people in this country don't know the truth and a twisted, powerful minority knows and don't care.
My last few posts have been negative in tone. I apologize for that. I'm usually more up beat. I really do believe that we can make things better. It's just that I know there is going to be a great deal of pain before that happens.
Key: Complain about this post
