A good pub is getting harder to come by.

Sounds like a fine place to have a beer.
Well written article.

Very fine pub...shame it's in the middle of the red light district!

Is the upstairs room still a non smoking area? And if it is, does the smoke still waft its way up from the rest of the pub?

The last thing I heard wafting down from up there was a scary country music singalong!

Eeeek!
Well it's obviously gone downhill badly since I frequented the establishment in the late 80s / early 90s

I can't vouch for it that far back, but I've never had a problem with the place. The beers good, there are no w****rs in shirts and shoes and they have a cat.
What more could you want?

I live in Rivelin, so it's flat all the way back until the very end!

Ah! You swine you
No seriously, this is an excellent entry on a truly noteworthy pub. It should be a definite pick for the Edited Guide.
In the meantime it might be worth checking out if they still have their upstairs non smoking room. That sort of a feature is the type of thing a lot of people look for in a pub nowadays. As I recall going back to my first vists there, having such a room set up in a pub was a real novelty.

I think the website mentions it...I'll look that one up.

Very nice entry!
I might like to see a bit more about the menu as the website mentions that it's a 'chipless' pub with home-cooked food. It also sounds delicious!
