The dog/cat thing is misleading, because Pulex irritans is specifically the human flea. Ctenocephalides felis is the cat flea and Ctenocephalides canis is the dog flea. Isn't it nice to know that there are hundreds (1600 I heard somewhere) of different types of fleas which, if they can't find their warm-blooded mammal of choice, will all munch on you!

Didn't think that dog fleas would go for humans, only cat fleas? Dunno why I thought that, 'cause if a flea is hungry why would it care? Urban myth maybe?
