Surely these are a classic American sandwich! Does anyone have a good recipe/explanation?

A great big pile of of ground beef in a sweet tomato-based sauce on a hamburger bun. It's sloppy because you have way more meat sauce than bun and it oozes out the sides, all over your face and onto your shirt.
There was a diner in Missoula, Hansen's (now closed ), that served a sloppy joe in a closed roll. They piped the meat filling through a small hole into the center of the bun and you would eat it like a juicy dumpling.

I've always wondered what sloppy joes were. And now I know. Are they in league with the washing powder manufacturers?

They must be. I daren't think of all the laundry that is done for children between the age where they can eat solids and the age they graduate from high school. Sloppy Joe eaters are displayed prominently in almost any laundry ad.

Sporky, I used to hate these when my mom made them, but I found a really quick, easy recipe that works. 1 pound ground beef (I use the 4% fat kind) browned. Add 1 can condensed cream of tomato soup. Let cook in. Add 1 T plain old yellow mustard. Serve on buns.
Really, that's it.
My mom used to put all sorts of stuff in ours, and if I was making it for me alone, I would probably add onion and garlic, but I don't like cooked peppers like they have in manwich or whatever that stuff is called.
And that last sentence is very stream of conciousness, isn't it?

I told you, quick, easy, down and dirty. And you know, Campbell's Condensed tomato is pretty much tomatoes and some spices. It's all of the knockoffs you have to read labels for.
