A914717 The Stone Roses - Burn Me Out Or Bring Me Home!
I've heard that their first album is being cited as the best album ever recorded, and having rediscovered it myself over Christmas, I thought I'd whip up a Guide entry on it.
I'll put the H2G2 links in over the weekend.

hi there
i thought this was very well-written, enjoyable reading as usual.. somehow it seems like, for the guide, one would expect a more specific-to-the-band kind of introduction but the historical context you give is important too.
also, maybe it's just me, but it wasn't totally clear that the heading 'the stone roses' referred to the album and not just the band in general. seems like it needs some bland, encyclopedia-type facts somewhere, who's in the band, what they play... stuff like that, perhaps before the analysis of the album.

oh yeah, and the beatles did, in fact, do airline hangars full of acid, didn't they? perhaps not all at once, but still.

I loved it
I agree with Jane about the headers. But then that is a problem the band have brought upon themselves here by giving the album the eponymous title.
In comparison to the introduction and description of the first album, the second section about the follow up and decline of the band feels thin somehow. I'm not sure which way would be the best approach. One, to build this section up with a track by track review of the album and a separate section on their decline as a funcrioning unit. Or two, to pretty much junk the whole lot and make this entry one on just how wonderful the first album was. A non fan would probably be able to comment more objectively than I.

Actually, I only intended to write about the first, eponymous album, I just shoved the other stuff in for context. It isn't intended to be a complete history of the band, and with regards to your posting I suppose really that the second section needs paring down, if not doing away with altogether. Hmmm. Suggestions anyone?

Well-written entry, but you might like to correct 'genuis' (penultimate para).
Never owned any Stone Roses albums, and my memory of that era has faded. I might now seek out the tracks you discuss...

Hi DMS
Oh, the Roses
I have the following almost ridiculously pedantic corrections to offer you
hi jinx -> high jinks
Heaven's sake -> heaven's sake
a la -> à la
sans -> sans (as it's a naturalised word rhyming with 'pans' - the Bard used it)
...and are you going to be more specific about who 'Elizabeth My Dear' refers to?
Anyway, this is superb and makes me want to listen to the album right now. But my copy's thousands of miles away
Jack

Hello DogManStar,
Great entry. I actually listened to this yesterday because of your entry. It is surely one of the best albums of all time, my personal favourite.
Anyway, I think you should either stick to the first album, to keep it more optimistic and "up" and not mention their miserable decline. Or you should give a full account of the "rise and fall" of the Roses, giving as much space to the fall as to the rise. I personally would like to see the former, as a fan. If you explicitly state that you're dealing with the first lp in the title or introduction (You could call the entry "The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses" ) then that'll be fine.
I agree with Jack that a little more detail needs to be in "Elizabeth My Dear". It is a strong anti-monarchy song, and does indeed contain a death threat!
Good job
Ste

Ok, I'll change the title, it would sort a lot of things out.
I mentioned the decline mainly because of context, but also because wasted potential is something the band will always be linked with.
I'll amend Elizabeth My Dear.
Is Waterfall anti-American? 'This American satellite's home' etc? Apparantly they were thought of as anti American in some quarters, although it escaped me.

Like it... possibly worth mentioning 'This is the One' being used at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester?

Was it really? Shudder. Makes sense though, it is that sort of tune. Fool's Gold pops up quite often on sports programmes, for some reason.

Hiya,
I really came here expecting something about an alleged third album by the SRs, that i had vaguely heard about on a recent chrimble visit to the motherland.
Did they get back together and do an album last year?
This question may give away the fact that i ain't read the whole article; but that's coz i got as far as the track list and decided i'd rather give the album a good once over and *then* read your review, to compare and contrast.
the entry is great, though. Obviously a touch 'pro' but so am i; all 'review' entries are bound to be subjective to an extent.
anyway, more comments when i've had time to listen and then read,
spiff

I certainly didn't hear of anything about new releases or collaborations: I had a quick tour of their websites while writing the entry and didn't see anything about it.
It is a good album, though, as I think I said at the beginning of the thread it is being touted as the best ever recorded. Which will always start massive debate, but good that it is thought of so highly in any case. I didn't listen to it for about five years, put it on over Christmas as entertainment while walking the dog and it blew me away.

Hmmm.... much as I love the album, I wouldn't say it's the best ever - for me the rest of the songs struggle to live up to the stratospheric standards set by 'She Bangs the Drums', 'Waterfall', 'This Is The One' and 'I Am the Resurrection'... whenever I put the album on I always end up skipping forwards to those tracks.
But those four are well up there among the best pop songs ever recorded - along with 'Sally Cinnamon' and 'Mersey Paradise'.
Anyway, all of this is just my personal opinion, and what's what worth???

I wouldn't necessarily say it was the best ever either, although it is certainly one of the best of the last twenty years. Last summer there was a rush of best band/best album/best single polls, and it surprised many people by doing very well, and topping a few.
Mersey Paradise is an excellent track, isn't it.

Your Guide Entry has just been picked from Peer Review by one of our Scouts, and is now heading off into the Editorial Process, which ends with publication in the Edited Guide. We've therefore moved this Review Conversation out of Peer Review and to the entry itself.
If you'd like to know what happens now, check out the page on 'What Happens after your Entry has been Recommended?' at EditedGuide-Process. We hope this explains everything.
