They must have thought to make the best of it and enjoy some more of the country after all the fuss of getting through customs.
The distance is relative, if you don't count the distance traveled by ferry. Depending on the fuel tank size it might be able to make the round trip up to 2.5 times before needing to refuel. They will probably not wait that long though, but choose to get their fuel where it is cheapest.
