paulh, the apocalypse is coming, it's just late

We're into freezing and near-freezing temperatures nearly every night now, and only a few brave things like American Asters and (improbably) late-season roses are still able to bloom. My daylilies have put out one last bud, but it is frozen shut now smiley - sadface.

But that butterfly seems unperturbed on its flower. Go for it, butterfly!

paulh, the apocalypse is coming, it's just late

This time of year we sometimes see those gray moths that hug our doorways. They want to come in. Maybe they are Winter Moths?

I was watching a youtube video about caterpillars that overwinter by attaching themselves to twigs. Apparently birds such as chickadees peck away at tree branches, and it's because of the caterpillars that are there.
