Rhenish Curiosities

Here are some things I would like to share from my hiking trip along the river Rhine this fall holiday.

We were walking from hotel to hotel (the luxury option when you leave the kids with your parents).

Hotel Loreley did not exactly look that comfortable (we didn’t stay there, but anything within a 20km radius from the actual Loreley rock / statue seemed to be named after it).

Further up the Rhine, we encountered the former “Freistaat Flaschenhals” (Free state of Bottleneck). An area that was independent for several years after WW I, when the French and the Americans made a miscalculation in dividing the Eastern Rhine shore, leaving a bottleneck shaped piece of land unoccupied. This was problematic, since there was a railway passing through it and it contained two villages and a lot of vineyards.

As much as we love nature, Nature sometimes loves us back.

Most mornings, we started in a misty landscape, not seeing much of the hills and castles that litter the shores of the river Rhine. The magic happened for about ten minutes during midmorning, when the sun started to conquer the mist, leading to beautiful rays of light.
