I only drove about 2,000 miles last year

I don't have a job to drive to, as I'm retired. My "work" consists of serving as the secretary for a nonprofit tenants' association. I walk to *all* the meetings I attend. I get groceries delivered from a supermarket that is less than two miles away.

I meet my relatives via Zoom. Likewise sessions with my shrink.

I don't think I could pare back much more.....

Yes, working from home certainly reduced my mileage this year. That's good that your supermarket is not far away for your deliveries, either. I do go out to the supermarket, but we have a good variety of options within about 5 miles smiley - ok and I'm very lucky that I don't have to travel far to get to lovely nature reserves smiley - zen

My trailer park has an area of conservation land along the river. I headed a committee to fill the entrance ramp and other prominent areas with beautiful plants and flowers, most of them native, all of them perennials. Things that I grew from seed four or five years ago continue to get more impressive, and/or self-seed.

I get a little sad this time of year, as our beautiful flowering plants begin to downshift in preparation for the winter. We also have a long row of dwarf Alberta spruces along the entrance ramp, which will look cute topped with snow in the winter months. Six years ago, when we bought them, they were tiny. We paid eight dollars apiece. They are much bigger now, and continue to grow. We also have two holly bushes, which keep growing. The female holly has loads of bright red berries. We also have a Carolina rose which has bright red rose hips.

I guess I've drifted off-topic.....

Also The last few years I have made a point of always walking where I can and I haven't got a lot to carry.
So far I haven't driven 2000 miles in any year since I retired 8 years ago.
I bought my car new(ish) when I retired and it has only just done 11,000 miles.

My brother-in-law inspects my car every year. He has to take it for the emissions test. The guy there can't believe the (lack of) mileage on my car. smiley - laugh What can I say? It's not a big town and we carpool for road trips.

I do that when I can. However, we sometimes get a winter when we get 80 to 100 inches of snow. The roads get plowed, but the sidewalks usually don't. So, either I figure out how to get everything delivered (including clean laundry), or I continue driving at least a little bit.

(I will need to pass a vision test for my driver's license renewal in April 2023. My fingers are crossed that I can get cataract surgery by then. My Health Maintenance Organization has been fraying at the edges.)

Snow in London is something of a rarity and tends not to last long a week or two generally, so it doesn't really affect walking.
I will get in the car if it is cold and wet, no point in being uncomfortable while doing the shopping.

Just checked. I drove 33k km last year (down from 40k before lockdowns), but I expect 45k+ from now on (my wife has another job in the weekends which includes more travel). Nearly all of it is commuting. I do online drive-by groceries that are en route between my home and work (the park, open trunk, load stuff, pay stuff and go variety). Anything local (up to 10-15 km), I do on foot or by bike.(that is enough to reach my daily step goal)

I hope you will get your cataract operation Paul. My father just had his on both eyes and claims he is the best looking person in the family now (everybody else has glasses). Around here they leave some time between the two eyes, so you get to know how big the difference is. (turns out that what you have called white for years actually was some greenish grey compared to actual (and blinding) white. My mother in law is now in between two operations. she says all rectangles are parallelograms now.

I never liked commuting. I used to take a tortuous public transportation route from a rooming house in Brookline to my job in Dedham. Then I bought my first car, but Brookline requires off-street overnight parking, which I couldn't secure. So, I moved to a trailer Park in Boston that was less than two miles from my job. In nice weather, I could walk to work but Winter was too snowy for that.

I ended up driving a lot to visit relatives who live 100 miles away, though. I haven't seen them since March, 2020. I don't trust my vision on long drives.

My other car is non-existent.

The one I have does close to 50 mpg, which is fine by me.
