Life on a Small Planet

Earth from Saturn, by NASA.

Every passing hour brings the Solar System forty three thousand miles closer to Globular Cluster M13 in Hercules – and still there are some misfits who insist that there is no such thing as progress.

Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan

Vonnegut has it right. There's some progress, always. No matter how dire things seem at times.

In this issue, we've collected photos, stories, and intriguing topics to cheer you up while we're all waiting for progress. The humour might not cheer you up, but we expect you to be stoic about it, as always. Here are some of this week's highlights.

  • Unusual things: Weird-headed creatures from the Miocene. A plaque from the Isle of Wight. Unexpected sights in the Netherlands and Russia. Meanwhile, back in the Post Office, TJ has something to show you.
  • Views and Reviews: Awix has cinema. So do I, of a sort. Mine's old and might make your head spin. There's a video. I talk about history, and whether getting kids interested in it necessarily involves sharp objects. Awix's may cause vertigo. You get an idea what to expect when he emails me, 'This one might be up your street.' Beware.

    FWR has thoughts on friendship.
  • Stories: Bluebottle's world gets weirder, as if it could. Paulh shares a true story from the past when draft board numbers were important. Paigetheoracle has a story he found on a sign. See what you think.
  • Topics for Discussion: Can you identify Superfrenchie's mystery plant? What do you think of FWR's pea conundrum? What are your thoughts on Moscow architecture and buses and/or blackcurrant jam? Come talk about it.
  • Just Beauty: Some things are too lovely to describe. That's why we have cameras. Drink in the landscapes and admire the flowers.

We'll be back next week with more Stuff. (Send more Stuff!) Remember: if we don't train our minds onto important things like food, flowers, and fun, the politicians and pundits win. Ignore them and read this instead.

Quote of the Week: Multiculturalism is the process of cultural appropriation, which of course is an exchange, not a one way street.... Societies wouldn't evolve without it.
