Create Challenge, June 2021: First Contact
Then felt I like some watcher of the skies
When a new planet swims into his ken...
Seeking out new life and new civilisations has a long tradition with humans because they tend to move around a lot. The enterprise is not without its perils – no matter who makes the first move. This month we're asking for your thoughts on First Contact. What are your opinions on the subject?
Do you instantly think of Conquistadors? Captain James Cook's Endeavour sailing to the Australian shores? Missionaries in the jungle? Or Jean-luc Picard boldly splitting infinitives on far-flung planets?
This month look back, or forward, to a time when first contact occurs between two totally different cultures. What was/is the impact on the indigenous peoples? Do the negatives outweigh any advances?
Write a guide entry about a first-contact situation. Or send the h2g2 Post a fictional story about a speculative first contact.
Take a different perspective, perhaps. You might like to describe the first contact made by telegram or video call or how the technology was invented and adapted. What were the benefits of improved contact? Were there disadvantages?
Artists do your thing! Pictures, photos, a short video? You know the deal. Send 'stuff' to the Post, you know the Editor loves this kind of contact!
