A Conversation for French Birds 3: Mesange bleue

Mésange - Mees

Hello! These are very pretty. It's interesting to me that in Afrikaans we call a tit a 'Mees' which is very similar to its French name! We only get a few kinds of tits here in South Africa, and they're grey, brown, black and white, not prettily coloured like these.

We also have to put up with losing stuff in translation.

Dutch: Koolmees
English: Great tit

English: Coal tit
Dutch: Zwarte mees

Hi!
Yes, it's "Meis" in German too smiley - ok
I might be misremembering, but isn't "tit" a shortened version of "titmouse"? (from tit, meaning small, and Meis, meaning bird, I think?)

Hello! Yes it's something like that. 'Mase' I think was the original word for the birds...

If it turns out to be a mace, I should duck, if I were you.
