How is it that the police don't know who was killed, but the lawyers know enough to read the will?

The will being read is that of Eve Eeel - her body (well, skull as that was all that survived) was already identified by her dental digital downloads (dental records being outdated technology) - whereas the unidentified body is someone else.

Someone benefits, though. The detective who solves a mystery is celebrated.
Eve Eel represents the worst possible industry (fashion), and she has deleted herself from the earth. Maybe that's a plus for the earth, depending on how future episodes turn out.
Not that I hope to influence you. The professor who once worked for Eve now work for the police.
