Hi, Willem
Yep, that sure is a heavy and muscular beast.
In "Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress" - by Dai Sijie - I remember reading that the protagonist managed to get an ox (possibly a Gaur) killed, and enjoyed the meat. In a Communist society, there are so many ruls and regulations! If you can inadvertently end up with a good meal, even at he expense of an ox, you may be ahead, for whatever value of ahead you can manage.

Hello! I don't think wild gaur are eaten much. I did mention that there's a domesticated form called a Gayal which is more likely to be consumed. At any rate let me guess which eight other land critters are heavier than a gaur:
1. African bush elephant
2. Asian elephant
3. African forest elephant
4. White Rhino
5. Black Rhino
6. Asian one-horned rhino
7. Javan rhino
8. Hippopotamus
Am I right?

The rhinos that do make the list are White, Indian and Black.
Two buffalos and a bison come after the Gaur.
