Obviously streetlights conntected with a gas tube and burning this way were a great achievement. Before they were used every house owner with a streetlamp at his house had to send someone to pick up oil for the lamp. It was distributed every day.
I read that when the first gas lamp was used at a pharmacy in Vienna even the emperor himself had to go there with his family to see that new kind of light.
