Snarky Rejections, 1830

Godey's Lady's Book was a high-class publication in 1830. The issue this excerpt is taken from (vol 29) also marks the first appearance of 'Thou Art the Man', a really outrageous shaggy-dog story of a detective piece by Edgar Allen Poe. Poe was also an editor at times. I don't know if he wrote this editorial comment or not, but it's snarky, which was like him.

November authors: just be glad if all your rejection slip says is, 'We're sorry, but this doesn't meet our requirements.'

'My First Serenade' – 'and last, we hope.' Oh, snork. That laugh echoed down the corridors of time.

Godey's Lady's Book was a popular magazine which premiered some of Edgar Allen Poe's most famous stories. In this editorial column, they list some of the rejected manuscripts by various correspondents. They're really snarky about it, too.
