But I do remember having a newly "formed" frog on my hand

Yes, too few of them around. We get baby toads coming from the river and wandering through our garden each year. We also had frogs in our garden this year (obviously living under a stack of wood that my husband didn't manage to cut for the oven yet). I'm not sure what this baby actually is.

Many of our british small species of animals etc, are on the declineclimate change/changes to land management, the list goes on 
hedgehogs are becoming a rarity as well
