Yes, on the face of the story it was a 'marriage of convenience', for want of a better phrase, that they could both work in the inn together as landlord and landlady, whereas as single women they wouldn't have had that opportunity to make their own way in the world.

An LGBT+ historian http://rictornorton.co.uk/eighteen/lesbmarr.htm suspects the story was 'straightwashed', but we can't know now indeed...

Yes, it is good that Mary/James was allowed to live in peace after the court case - too much to hope for at that time that a single woman could continue to run a pub, so that was the best possible outcome.
