I was attacked by a squadron of these when hiking round the top of Scotland a few years ago (to imitate William McGonagall, Oh the Clegg flies around Loch Eribol, they bite you something terrible!).

If you had been bitten by these buglars, you wouldn't say that like it is a Monty Python sketch. They can create big, useless lumps on the body, if you react to their bites

I haven't seen horseflies, but I've been bothered by deerflies, also painful pests.
