I know how to attract hummingbirds, it's just that there are no hummingbirds to be attracted. I plant red petunias (they can spot the bright colors as they fly overhead).
I get bees of many different kinds. I've seen Monarch butterflies gorging on nectar from my swamp milkweed.
My yard is set up so that there's almost always something blooming in it from early May to late August. Right now, the perennial sunflowers are holding forth in all their yellow glory.

This one's a keeper. It can survive being eaten by woodchucks and then grow back and bloom anyway! It is invasive in a good way, with a robust, interconnected root system. It can handle anything from full sun to shade.
