So many different plants, so little time to become a master of identification. 
Anyway, I' always happy to see thistle featured, as it is underappreciated.
Goldfinches are dear to my heart. They seem to be fond of chicory and thistles for building their nests. Maybe they like the seeds as well.

I think what you identified as lobelia is actually veronica.
We have huge thistles this year. About 2 meters high. I left them all grow, they are great.

We have Veronica, just not in that color. There's an almost fluorescent quality about the deep purple of some lobelia.
