If you had the money, and you were lucky, the person you wanted to talk to would pick up the receiver and you could have a conversation.

If you wanted to send a textual message, you needed an enveloped, a stamp, and the services of a postman. Luckily, by the time the telephone came along, you could contact overseas correspondents by sending a telegram. The last telegram was sent in 2001, or so I've read.
