Some jobs ago, we had a change of office manager. After one month, the new office manager managed to automate such a huge amount of processes, that she reduced the job from fulltime (40 hours) to only 12 hours a week. Then she left out of boredom. The new new office manager threw out all the automation and worked 40 hours a week happily ever after.

Yes, there's definitely a 'happy medium' in there somewhere - balancing a variety of high and low level tasks helps to get job satisfaction

My own job is a mix of desk and workshop, with sufficient distance between the two to keep fit through walking.

My current job is a good mix of activities, too - I go walking at lunch time for my keep fit, but I do have a variety of computer work and non-computer work to do each day, so that keeps things interesting
