It isn't uncommon to see two postboxes next to each other (or three if you have one for franked post), or have double postboxes with two openings (Type E). Postbox spotters enjoy seeing if they could find unusual combinations, so different types next to each other, such as an early Victorian High Aperture next to a Type G, or different monarchs next to each other – Bembridge used to have an unusual father/daughter pair (a King George VI next to an early Queen Elizabeth II). Traditionally there'd be one for local post that would go to the local sorting centres and the other for national and international post – so labelled 'Island' and 'Mainland' on the Isle of Wight and London ones used to be labelled 'Town' and 'Country'. As they've got rid of the local sorting centres and just have the larger ones, the postboxes aren't needed for two different types of post. They still have the two postboxes because they are part of the community, and some (Victorian) postboxes are Listed Historic Monuments and so cannot be removed.

Only in England would a mailbox be a listed monument. smiley - rofl (And only in New York City would a person be.)

Caiman raptor elk - Inside big box, thinking.

Sees little brass plaque saying "A postbox once stood here".

Most of ours have been moved inside bookshops and the like, just like the post offices themselves. More difficult to blow up around Sylvester.

Does this mean that you can't mail a letter when the bookstores are closed? smiley - sadface

I think they are legally required to maintain several postboxes outside and do a minimum amount of delivery rounds. You just have to go further to get to a box.

Speaking of monuments: I think it was a monumental error to de-nationalise the post system.

On the other hand, can't remember the last time I had to post anything in hardcopy, and for parcels, you have to go to the bookstore/post office anyway.

Diferent countries, different ways of doing things. My mailbox continues to receive mail, and junk mail continues to predominate smiley - erm
