A Via Ferrata is a protected climbing route. Via is a road or path. Ferrata means that iron supports of some kind are used. It looks like a fun way to get out in the fresh air and enjoy the sights from the top of the mountain. smiley - smiley

Apparently there is at least one venerable castle and some picturesque churches. It's in the northern part of Italy, in the Lombardy region. Northeast of Milan, and North of Bologna.

(Wish I was there now. smiley - smiley)

[From a duck]

There's apparently a scenic descent path that winds through olive groves.

There is. Scenically translates here as "more dangerous than the via ferrata" die to Mud in the rocky path.

As a matter of perspective, I also did this via ferrata with my four year old. So it is not that hard. But it is worth it. There is also a geocache halfway up.

The Castle is indeed worth visiting.

I've always thought that four-year-olds were very fond of mud. So, why be in any kind of hurry when you are descending. Enjoy the mud for as long as possible. smiley - tongueincheek

(For the record, even when I was 12 or 13, nothing made me happier than digging out a frog pond in a muddy section of the wetland slope. The down side was that nothing bothered my mother more than seeing me come home with such muddy jeans and shoes. smiley - yuk)

He does like mud. It is just that mud on top of a steep rocky path makes things a bit slippery.

Getting back to the title question: We did not actually swim in Lake Garda. Like many great lakes in Italy and Switzerland, most of the shore is private property and thus unavailable for reaching the actual lake (unless it is owned by the campsite you are on). We did feed the ducks at the marina though (as a matter of fact, the ducks came to us to feed while we were having lunch)and the spa was at a much better temperature than the lake anyway.
