This is interesting and amusing and Anne Royall sounds a remarkable woman. smiley - smiley

I wonder whether it was only women who were accused of being 'scolds'. I associate punishment by ducking with the witch trials of the seventeenth century.smiley - witch Both seem to have been linked to a fear of independent minded women.

As a detail, is the spelling of 'sware' in the description of the trial deliberate?

You're absolutely right, MVP. Laws like this were mostly used against women, although at least one man was convicted of witchcraft in Salem.

If you get a chance to listen to the Jeff Biggers radio interview, you can hear a discussion of how laws like this were used to silence women, and how important recognition of this fact is for an understanding of women's history.
